A Letter from Neptune

A Letter from Neptune

To the Passengers of the Costa Concordia,

I want to express my deepest sorrow to the passengers and crew of the Costa Concordia that shipwrecked on January 13, 2012. Since I am the god of the sea, other spirit beings are wondering why I allowed this tragedy to happen.

I can only say that I rarely interfere with human activities anymore, however with so many people on board, I probably would have attempted a rescue had I been nearby. During that entire evening, I was sleeping in the deep sea off the coast of Tripoli.

I created the reef that tore a hole in the ocean liner by causing a seismic upheaval under the sea floor so that I might enjoy an underwater rock garden. However, that was thousands of years ago, and boats were much smaller then and were in no danger of hitting this submerged reef.

The cruise line and the captain of the Costa Concordia knew the dangers of navigating too close to shore. They thought that they were above the law of the sea, but now the ship will rest in peace beneath the turquoise waves.

With sympathy,

Neptune
